Hi members, for this Hari Raya Public Holiday, let’s do an interesting hike to explore the old unknown hidden secrets, history, heritage sites & murals of Ang Mo Kio & Bishan (that you never knew) as well as visit the ruins and remnants of the Lost Old Hainan Village.

The morning scenic hike will take us through Ang Mo Kio & Bishan kampong streams, bridges, hidden street murals, parks, ‘secret farms’, the largest Bird Singing park in Singapore, nature reserve, boardwalks, reservoir and finally the ruins and remnants of the Lost Old Hainan Village.

Yes … A Nostalgic Ang Mo Kio/ Bishan you never knew!

Ang Mo Kio was once a cluster of rustic kampongs and markets spread across an expanse of rural farmland criss-crossed by streams and joined by bridges (kios) built by the colonial government (ang mo). Rambutan (ang mor dan) trees were also abundant in the villages. These possibly gave rise to the name “Ang Mo Kio”.

As a boy, I remembered visiting my uncle’s kampong house in Ang Mo Kio. We had to cross many streams and bridges to reach the house. I had fond memories of plucking and eating rambutans from behind the house. The interesting old places, art murals by S’pore artist YC in different locations reminisce the Old Ang Mo Kio and intertwine its rustic old world charm with its present day buzz.

THE LOST OLD HAINAN VILLAGE

For members exploring this lost village, we’ll take you through the trails past streams, abandoned wells, pottery jars, building foundations and even old road networks.

These are all remnants of a glorious Hainanese Kampung (village) that were left behind to give a glimpse of what life was like there in the past.

The history of how these dialect ethnic group lived and who they are can be found along certain sections of the trails.

Hainanese immigrants, who were the last of the Chinese communities to settle in Singapore, established the kampung in the 1930s.

After the last resident left in the 1980s due to housing development plans, the land was eventually covered by secondary forest.

The vignettes of the villagers’ past, about how they made a living for themselves, are told through boards along the trails and elsewhere in the park.

This hike will be led by David Lim – (Tour/ Trekking Guide Trainer) with more than 45 yrs of hiking, trekking & international travel experience.
